In the wild Altolamprologus compressiceps (Red Fin) feeds primarily on insect larvae, small crustaceans , but also on small fry that they suck out of the crevices in the rocks. They are laterally compressed, the specialization that allows them access to these foods where other cichlids cannot. Despite their large mouth size, they should not be a threat to other adult fish in the aquarium, including adult shell dwellers. this variety found down the coast at the mouth of the Lufubu River. It's similarly high-bodied but darker and with less barring. The fry definitely have better color.
