Scientific Name: Altolamprologus calvus (Black) The common black calvus is a mildly aggressive substrate spawner that is a small fry predator. The calvus also feeds on insect larvae and small crustaceans. Their specialized laterally compressed mouth allows them access to small narrow crevices in the rocks. There are many varieties of black calvus the one pictured here is a wild caught ink fin. They thrive on mysis shrimp, krill, and Our custom fish food formula in the aquarium. They appreciate the addition of a quality aquarium or Cichlid Salt at the rate of 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. We have fed our calvus the current All Purpose Fish Food Formula in our Florida Facility for over a year. Our cichlids are noticeably more active, grow quicker, have improved color, and we have all but eliminated bloat in even the most sensitive species, including tropheus.
