Overview
Tetra are species of small freshwater fish from Africa, Central America and South America belonging to the biological family Characidae and to its former subfamilies Alestiidae (the "African tetras") and Lebiasinidae. The Characidae are distinguished from other fish by the presence of a small adipose fin between the dorsal fin and caudal fin. Many of these, such as the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), are brightly colored and easy to keep in captivity. Consequently, they are extremely popular for home aquaria From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TANGANYIKA CICHLIDS SOLD ON THIS SITE ARE GENERALLY 1 TO 2 INCHES.  ALL OF THESE FISH ARE SOLD AS UNSEXED JUVENILES. DIFFERENT SIZES WILL BE DESIGNATED IN THE SIZE CHART BELOW.  GENDER CHOICE WILL BE AVAILABLE ON SELECTED MEDIUM AND LARGE FISH ONLY.

Small:  1 inch fry (should be kept in a separate tank to grow) some shellies mayl be less than an inch

Regular: 1.00 -1.75 inches

Medium: 2.00 - 2.5 inches

Large:    3-4 inches

If you are stocking a new tank or a tank with cichlids under 2.5 inches you should be safe with small , and regular sizes.  If you are stocking a tank that has existing cichlids that are over 3 inches you should only choose regular, or medium sizes.

Most cichlids sold in pet stores are 2 -2.5 inches in size. Our fish are sold smaller because of the demand for these fish and because they ship better at smaller sizes.  Our customers have accepted this due to the rarity of the fish offered on our website compared to many of the retail stores. These fish grow so fast, the initial size is less relevant to the quality of genetics and rarity of species.  Our regular sized fish will measure between  the width of a quarter and the width of a $.50 cent piece.   The dynamics of the size is manifested when you know that a 2  inch fish will appear to be 3-4 times the mass of a 1.25 inch fish, since it is not just longer but deeper and thicker and the color is often more robust.

It is important to understand that we sell high quality Tanganyika cichlids mostly from Wild collected breeding stock.  These fish are often small because of the high demand for their species.  Please remember small fish will grow fast but fish of line bred or hybrids will never be great fish no matter how much the grow.  We sell genetics over size here a Bluegrass Aquatics but do promise to send you the largest fish available for the size category you ordered.
