Scientific Name: Cyrtocara moorii is called the Blue Dolphin enjoys a wide distribution in the sandy plains of Lake Malawi, where it feeds on small crustaceans and other foods that are stirred up in the sand. This popular cichlid also has a unique habit of following other sand sifters to harvest overlooked food debris left behind in their forging efforts. This peaceful Dimorphic Maternal Mouth brooder reaches a maximum size of 8 to9 inches and is a favorite in the Hap and Hap/peacock mixes featured on this site. It performs well on the Red Zebra Stampede and Rainbow Zebra and supplement of Krill and Plankton. A tank size of 75 gallon and larger is recommended and temp of 78 to 82 degrees. An aquarium or cichlid salt at the rate of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons is also helpful. Cyrtocara moorii is a beautiful, mild-tempered fish that is a delight to keep. It is commonly known in the hobby as the Malawi Blue Dolphin, and was once classified as Haplochromis moorii. Now it is the only species belonging to the genus Cyrtocara. The nickname Blue Dolphin originates from the shape of its head a nuchal hump and bill-like mouth which resembles that of a dolphin.
